...Schkade and Kahneman (1998) call the focusing illusion. In a fascinating demonstration, Schkade
and Kahneman asked students at universities in the Midwest and in California to judge their own happiness and the happiness of students at the other location. The comparison highlighted the advantages of California — better climate, more cultural opportunities, and greater natural beauty. Both students in the Midwest and those in California predicted that Californians were happier, but in fact, students at the two locations were equally happy.refers to Schkade, D.A., & Kahneman, D. (1998). Does living in California make people happy? Psychological Science, 9, 340–346.

Drawing on recent claims in the study of relationships, attachment, and emotion, the authors hypothesized that romantic love serves a commitment-related function and sexual desire a reproduction-related function.
...we define romantic love as a motivational state associated with feelings of attachment and the inclination to seek commitment with one partner, and we define sexual desire as a motivational state that leads the individual to seek opportunities for sexual activity.
Is there evidence that differentiates brief occurrences of romantic love from those of sexual desire? To our knowledge, the answer is no.Romantic Love and Sexual Desire in Close Relationships. Gian C.Gonzaga, et al. Emotion. Vol 6. No. 2, 163–179.

1. Meaning of happiness seems to depend on individual's estimate of his/her life expectancy. It would be interesting to run a series of thought experiments on "what would happiness be if you were to live 10years; 20yrs; 30yrs;40;60;80;100;150;300;1000?" Check for qualitative changes on the timeline.

3. High divorce rates. Why? If people were "designed by evolution" to live till about 30-40 with imminent danger of death from childbirth (women), violence (men), desease(children), then monogamy seems to be a cultural patch on a biological problem. Serial monogamy.
4. would be interesting to trace evolution of prayer.

Intelligence is irrelevant to a happy old age
Intelligence may lead to a better paid job and quality of life but, in old age, cleverness has no effect on happiness, new research suggests.
