Jul. 8th, 2005 11:17 pmthere was a tree that bore fruit enabling control of procreation and a tree that bore fruit enabling control of longevity. what else could be there? there must be something that allows for control of resources. is it an learned or discovered ability? probably, the former, otherwise there would be a "replenish" tree. its interesting that the snake found the weakest point in the system, but couldn't exploit it himself. or was he just curious to see what happens, if an explicit prohibition is removed. in any case, the Lord God's original experiment unexpectedly fails, and he decides to redefine the environment (update: is this true?) rather than take away from the humans the ability to control procreation. ( for some reason the whole story reminds me of Romeo and Juliet).
then there's a period of experiments to balance the system by controlling human longevity. he ends up with establishing a specific value: "And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive on account of man, for that he also is flesh(?): and his days shall be a hundred and twenty years".
but the new found parameter doesn't solve the problem of runaway replication. even "distinguished men" get into it ( cf. greek mythology ). there's no replenishment, so the earth becomes corrupt, and the Lord decides to start over with Noah. remarkably, he doesn't repeat the Adam and Eve experiment. Maybe because he couldn't prevent them from eating the forbidden fruit.
"And the Lord repented thta he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth: both man, and beast, and creeping things, and the birds of the air; for I repent that I have made them. But Noah found favour in the eyes of the Lord."
NB: need a system diagram here, wrt controlled parameters and scalability.
also, the Qayin vs Hevel episode needs some thinking, e.g. why the Lord God required an offering.
