update 3/3/9: might be related to the ratchet effect as mentioned here.

...citizens' interpretations of events are slanted toward their previously held convictions. Evidence for this phenomenon is drawn from a variety of sources. In Lord et al's classic experiment (1979), opponents of the death penalty were more likely to find fault with a study suggesting that it deters serious crime; death penalty supporters were similarly resistant to a study that drew the opposite conclusion. In fact, exposure to discordant evidence only made people more set in their ways.

facts that do not conform to one's views make her more certain in her beliefs. extremely strong evidence or external influence is required to overcome a perceptual bias.

* from goods and services economy to information/network economy

* from scarcity economics to abundance economics

* abundance of information means stiff competition and fast (re-)productive cycles (see http://watertank.livejournal.com/1031039.html )

* fast information means heavier emotional components

* abundance of information - > scarcity of attention ( twitter ) ( more information and/or more channels)

* fast, emotional response to content

* system 1 vs system 2

* сиськи!

* modern art as e-coli

* "feels right" interpersonal justice

* so what?

- emotional interfaces and control signals ( telegraph content in 10 seconds, e.g. foul graphic emotional language)

- attention routing

- conflicts with workplace rules ( procedural justice )

- possible advantage: mid-term rational thinking

It would be interesting to correlate the numbers with company or stock performance.

it would be interesting to determine what trend means in terms of the theory. then figure out how to detect, ride, or even create one. what would be a trendable technology. in this context technology has a wider interpretation, similar to the one used in Douglas production function y=f(N,K,A)=A*Kx*N1-x.
For example, a new religion can be considered a new technology that starts a certain trend that changes the world. A new concept of happiness, e.g. introduced by Socrates/Plato and later extended by Aristotle, would fit this definition as well.
Is it possible that trendable is equivalent to scalable, or it has greater system-level implications?

British publisher Penguin Books may have the answer--a Web-based, collaborative novel that can be written, edited or read by anyone anywhere thanks to "wiki" software, the technology behind Web encyclopedia Wikipedia.

The novel, A Million Penguins, went live on Thursday and its first lines are already being written, edited and rewritten by enthusiasts on www.amillionpenguins.com.

Penguin, which embarked on the project with a group of creative writing and new media students, says it is using the novel as a test of whether a group of disparate and diverse people can create a "believable fictional voice."
