Sports fans whose favorite teams suffer defeat, for instance, show temporary decreases in mood and testosterone and even lose faith in their own mental and social abilities (Bernhardt, Dabbs, Fielden, & Lutter, 1998; Hirt, Zillmann, Erickson, & Kennedy, 1992).

International justice as a matter of visual perception

Procedure. Participants read a brief (one-page) essay outlining the history of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict from the perspectives of both the Israelis and the Palestinians. Accompanying the essay was a map of the region “for reference” .
- Half the participants viewed a map of Israel (in light color) and the Palestinian territories (in dark color) alone (Israel-focused map). On this map, Israel took up the large majority of the visual space.

- The other half of the participants received the same map pulled back in perspective to now show Israel (in light color) much smaller in the visual space, surrounded by the countries of the greater Middle East (in dark color; region focused map).

Participants were asked to study the map carefully because they would later be asked to redraw it from memory. This instruction was meant to increase the salience of the picture.

- We predicted that when viewing Israel as large (Israel-focused map), participants would perceive the Palestinians as underdogs; consequently, they would show more sympathy for and support to the Palestinians compared with the Israelis. In contrast, those viewing Israel as small (region-focused map) would perceive the Israelis as underdogs; consequently, they would show more support for and sympathy to them.

Обама - оппозиционный политик в Америке. Быков ( а не Каспаров ) - оппозиционный политик в России :))

Увлекательная дискуссия: добродетельный dyak пытается объяснить оппонентам, что Дмитрий Быков - писатель, а не политик.

sl_lopatnikov: Я знаю, что такое профессионал в определенной области - это тот, кто зарабатывает деньги, путем деятельности в данной области.
dyak: Ну и кто из Урнова, Злобина, Сванидзе и Быкова зарабатывает нынче деньги в качестве политика?
sl_lopatnikov: ВСЕ
dyak: А, ну тогда конечно и Петросян политик.

Самое интересное, что обсуждается статья в американской газете The NY Times. Некий sl_lopatnikov заявляет, что газета врет, когда пишет, что на российское телевидение не пускают оппозиционных политиков. В доказательство приводит примеры Урнова, Злобина, Сванидзе и Быкова, которые "зарабатывает деньги" на политике. Причем, он не одинок в этом абсурде: его мнение поддерживает куча народу - запись о "вранье" даже в top яндекса попала.

Почему? Возможно ли, что в американском и российском контексте политиком нельзя называть одного и того же человека?

В словаре Merriam-Webster:
POLITICIAN - 1: a person experienced in the art or science of government; especially : one actively engaged in conducting the business of a government; 2 a: a person engaged in party politics as a profession b: a person primarily interested in political office for selfish or other narrow usually short-sighted reasons

В словаре Ушакова:
ПОЛИ'ТИК, а, м. 1. Политический деятель. 2. Человек, интересующийся вопросами политики (разг.)

Получается, политическая культура настолько различна в двух странах, что фразы "an opposition politician" в NYT и "оппозиционный политик" в ЖЖ обозначают совершенно разные виды человеческой деятельности. Один делает политику, другой о ней говорит.
