i can now receive a letter faster than s/he can write it to me. but it only applies to personal letters. it doesn't cost her/him anything to send the letter. in the meantime, the ratio of letters per addressee has increased. this means that the ratio of personal letters to non-personal ones has decreased. which means electronic messaging leads to further increase in non-personal communications, i.e. the process of standardisation of human interaction started(? rather enabled, facilitated) by the invention of writing/printing/etc continues.
