The Soviet-German war, by David Glanz.

During the same period [Winter 1941-42], Stalin ordered the Leningrad and Volkhov Fronts to raise the siege of Leningrad by conducting concentric assaults across the Neva and Volkhov Rivers against Army Group North. Although the Volkhov Front’s 2nd Shock Army and a cavalry corps managed to penetrate German defenses, they too were soon isolated deep in the German rear only to be destroyed by German counterstrokes between May and July 1942. This operation too languished in obscurity for over 40 years, primarily because it was an embarrassing failure but also because the 2nd Shock Army’s last commander was the infamous General A. A. Vlasov, who surrendered in disgust to the Germans and later created the Russian Liberation Army that fought alongside Germany until war’s end.

Powell has become increasingly outspoken about the level of violence in Iraq, which he believes is in a state of civil war. “The civil war will ultimately be resolved by a test of arms,” he said. “It’s not going to be pretty to watch, but I don’t know any way to avoid it. It is happening now.”

He added: “It is not a civil war that can be put down or solved by the armed forces of the United States.” All the military could do, Powell suggested, was put “a heavier lid on this pot of boiling sectarian stew”.

well, duh!

Douglas Moore, 65, of Martin, who backs the war, shot and killed Harold Wayne Smith, 56, of Manchester, who opposed it, according to investigators.
....

One witness, Sam Hamman of Prestonsburg, told the Lexington Herald-Leader, "Harold was talking about the 14 people that were killed in Iraq the other day and Doug said that just as many people were killed on the highways here.”

This quickly escalated into an argument, then to a scuffle, and finally both men drew pistols outside a snack shed. The dead man was apparently just a little slower in firing. Witnesses said he stood for about five seconds before toppling on the walkway.
